Our Top 5 Fieldsports Podcasts

We are now at the end of the shooting season and thoughts will turn towards getting next season going already. Gamekeepers all over the UK will be hard at work with spring predator control programs, infrastructure repair, conservation and habitat work and a raft of the other daily jobs that keep you busy. Having a great podcast to listen to whilst in the vehicle on your mobile device is a great way to spend some time alone. Here are some interesting podcasts from the English speaking world that you might enjoy:-

The Broken Gun
This is a new podcast with only a couple of episodes recorded so far (as of 4th February). This podcast is hosted by Eddie aka the Somerset Hunter, Jonny Carter from TGS Outdoors fame and Lloyd Paterson from the Lloyd Paterson YouTube channel. This is a really nice fun podcast where the hosts have occasional guests and talk about all disciplines of shooting from clay busting to deer stalking. Podcasts like this are a great alternative to going to the pub with your mates in some ways and is top of our listen list at the moment. A word of warning this is defiantly an over 18’s after 9pm one with some swear words and proper potty mouth talk.

The Hunting Collective
The Hunting Collective is an American based podcast with host Ben O’Brien. It covers the ideologies and philosophies of the modern American hunter while touching on key ideas like conservation, hunters value systems and how to construct a better public image. A recurring cast of top hunting voices help drive the conversation and keep things pretty damn interesting. This is much more thought provoking than fun but the similarities of what those across the pond are going through in terms of anti shooters etc really hit home.

The Country Gent

If you love field sports, whisky and the great British countryside, this is the show for you. With a guest interview and a whisky tasting in every episode plus news and analysis/general ramblings from Rob and Nick, there’s something for everyone. The show not only covers shooting but also fishing and the guests are interesting and engaging.

The Meateater

Another podcast from the USA that builds on the belief that a deeper understanding of the natural world enriches all of our lives, host Steven Rinella brings a deep and relevant look at all outdoor topics including hunting, fishing, nature, conservation and wild foods. Filled with humor, irreverence and things that will surprise you, each episode welcomes a diverse group of guests who add their own expertise to the vast world of the outdoors. Again it is not UK based but the topics covered will interest you and keep you coming back for more.

WildFed Podcast

Hosted by Daniel Vitalis, The WildFed Podcast is about deepening your connection with the natural world through hunting, fishing, foraging, and, of course, food. It’s about the wild food that’s freely available on your landscape, at the edges of your town or city, and sometimes just outside your door, again this podcast is based in the USA but is always worth a listen and will give you some great foraging and cooking ideas. The podcast consists of interviews with biologists, authors, wildlife managers, foragers, hunters, anglers, chefs, friends, and plenty of educational and inspirational solo shows too.
